Note: the MATCH function has this same behavior — match type is optional and defaults to approximate match. In other words, it returns the last number that is less than or equal to the lookup value.
This is all fine and dandy when your data is sorted nicely, but it can be a disaster with unsorted data, because VLOOKUP might give you a totally incorrect result. Even worse, the result might look completely normal.
Make sure the value you are searching for is contained in the leftmost column designated in the table array of the second parameter of the VLOOKUP formula. Be careful with this parameter.
One example could be that the lookup value is in the wrong order in the parameter list. Make sure that the value you are searching for is in the leftmost or first parameter in the formula.
